I believe all dogs should be muzzle trained and seeing a dog wearing a muzzle should be completely normal and celebrated. There should be no stigma around muzzled dogs.
Why do dogs wear muzzles?
To prevent your dog from eating things on their daily adventures which might cause them harm. Repeated stomach surgery is not ideal, can cause complications and even mid or early life fatality. I have sadly seen this on too many occasions, when a muzzle with a scavenger guard on a young dog might have allowed the dog a much longer life.
To provide a break from an Elizabethan Collar post surgery e.g. going out for a toilet break but the Elizabethan Collar prevents your dog comfortably navigating through doorways, sniffing on a recovery walk etc.
For dogs who due to their genetics have a high 'prey drive' and might chase to kill other animals such as cats, squirrels, birds etc when off their lead. Yes, a solid recall has an element to play in this but that's another matter.
Dogs who play a bit too rough with smaller dogs.
Vet visits where the dog finds the situation scary and painful (e.g. ear infections, broken bones), it is our responsibility to keep the Vet team safe whilst our dog is cared for.
Groomer visits be those in salon, at home or in a mobile unit and it is our responsibility to keep the Grooming team safe whilst they de-matt fur, trim nails to assist with normal gait and movement etc.
Certain dogs fall under breed specific legislation and the law requires it or, a Court Order demands it.
Some dogs struggle to feel safe in their world perhaps due to their history or current medical condition and will attempt to bite anyone or anything who comes near them to protect themselves.
Behind every muzzled dog is a guardian doing their best, and a dog who deserves to be seen for who they really are and how much they are loved.
As with all my services, I come to you. I do not need to engage with your dog. I can assist you with muzzle training and fitting from behind a barrier / divide which you would provide, if your dog does not welcome strangers.
I carry with me a large selection of Muzzle Movement muzzles and 'add ons' so you can check product samples before you buy direct.
As well as a highly experienced, fully qualified & certified Dog Trainer who has been muzzle training dogs for many years, I am an affiliate of the Muzzle Movement and Approved Fitter.
